We have high expectations for all children at Totara Park School

Here are some ideas of what you can work on at home with your child, in preparation for school:

· write their name with a capital letter at the start and the rest lowercase. If they can write their surname as well that’s great!

· say the alphabet, know their letters and a word that starts with it i.e. b – ball

· count both forwards and backwards to 10 or to 20. Don’t forget about zero.

· make a group of toys and match the number to it.

· read a familiar story to you.

· follow a sequence of 2 or 3 instructions.

· take turns when playing a game and not get too upset if they lose.

At school we operate a structured day. It has been found that children like to know what is going to happen. Does your child

· have a set bedtime?

· have a task they do to help you, e.g. feed the cat, put their plate on the bench, etc?

· have a set morning routine?

· largely dress themselves?

· look after their belongings, e.g. lunchboxes, drink bottles?

· wear named clothing?

To arrange school visits please phone the school about 6 weeks before their birthday. Your child’s teacher will contact you and arrange visit times. We like children to have three visits before their birthday. These also give you time to find out more details about how you and your child can have a good start to school life.
